Mentoring Program Residents in Chezi’s Corner are not only taught to improve their own personal skills, they also participate in a train-the- trainer program to teach them to assist in helping other troubled youth. This very unique program validates the youth’s abilities to learn skills and then to teach others. Also, during their residency in Chezi’s Corner, youth are involved in individual counselling while at the same time assisted in obtaining advancement in their education or vocation. The High on Success Program teaches participants to address their personal problems with the assistance of trained house-parents and staff. Within a stable environment, residents will: • Increase self-esteem • Increase decision making skills • Increase personal control through anger management and conflict resolution skills • Decrease antisocial behaviours • Increase their sense of positive mental health • Become more productive in the community • Learn to mentor other youth having similar problems. • Improve communication skills. Jewish Identity: An integral part of Chezi’s Corner is the Jewish identity component. As previously noted, the residence is strictly kosher. Only kosher food is prepared following strict kashrus guidelines. Furthermore, within the home, Jewish heritage and religious themes are discussed in a non- threatening manner. Shabbat and Jewish holidays are observed, though each resident decides for himself the level of observance he feels most comfortable with. For those residents wishing to learn more about their Jewish identity, the house parents and/or staff assist the resident in finding additional sources to explore their heritage and religion at the level they desire. No formal planning of programs is done on Shabbat or Jewish holidays. From time to time, guest speakers are invited in to talk about various Jewish topics. |
