harmful incidents of troubled youth by providing services for youth and young adults (ages 16-24) within the community. The primary focus of the Program prepares troubled youth who are neither in school nor work to address their personal issues and then subsequently become mentors for other troubled adolescents and young adults. Data reflects that the longer the youth is not in school or working, the higher the likelihood of drug usage and crime involvement. The “High on Success©” Mentor Program provides participants with a means to increase self-esteem, decrease negative antisocial behaviours and increase their sense of positive mental health through personal stabilization. In return, it is the objective of the Program that residents strive to become more productive in the community by mentoring others coming from similar situations. Youth often complain that adults do not listen to them. Therefore, a working sub-committee of previously identified street youth and other youth, as well as professionals working in the field, have been invited to assist in designing and implementing the Program by forming an advisory committee. Also, youth accepted into the Program assist in setting parameters for the group in which they participate. Thus, youth who have felt that they do not have a voice in their lives (and society) are now participating in structuring a program to help themselves and others. This process has been developed to promote a sense of validation of their abilities and what they have to offer. Furthermore, this process promotes a sense of dignity and enriched self-esteem in the youth. As noted above, the “High on Success©” Mentor Program prepares troubled youth who are neither in school nor working to address their personal issues. We know that whether we are working with street youth and/or other troubled youth (all teens as a matter of fact), they listen more to their peers than to knowledgeable adults. Therefore, in this Program, there is the possibility of participants becoming mentors for other troubled adolescents and young adults. Research has proven that the best way to learn and reinforce a skill or topic is to teach it. The High on Success Program provides mental health court diversion programs for youth involved in minor criminal behaviours. Referrals for the court diversion program are made through the intake procedure. |
created as the result of the Art Outreach project depicted in the above flyer (which the students also created). As one part of the drop-in Day Program at High On Success, Regesh invited art students from Brebeuf College - on the web at http://brebeufcollege.ca/ - to participate. The students were reponsible for creating images of success from their eyes. A week prior to the event, the images were created on paper and transformed into the backdrop of the High On Success Day Program. Brebeuf Project Coordinator/Teacher: Catherine Pieroni |
