| Basic Component |
Program, activities will be divided into four main characteristics: 1. Learning modules whereby the participant can drop in and, with the assistance of the youth worker, complete a unit on a particular topic (i.e. self-esteem building, anger management decision making, personal control, interpersonal communication, etc.). At the completion of each module, the participant will be rewarded with either a fun bucks or gift certificate to commemorate the success of his/her completion of the module. The youth can work in each unit at his/her own speed. Thus he/she could attend the Program anywhere from once to five times per week. 2. Skills or interest workshops will be offered two – three times per week. Either a Regesh staff or outsider with special interests and skills will run these workshops. Workshops can be either a few hours in length or up to a complete day program. Youth can choose which Program to come to and participate in their selected workshops. 3. Special activities including field trips, games and activities either at the Program site or elsewhere. 4. Homework Club. Assistance with homework or helping youth with correspondence courses will be available during the hours of the Day Program. Should additional tutorial be required, staff will assist the youth in finding volunteers to meet his/her academic needs. Likewise, other day program youth can volunteer and to help each other when appropriate. Youth can choose to participate in any part or all of the day programs. Each youth will have a registration card, which will be completed on the first day of attendance. Likewise, program staff will monitor and keep attendance of when each youth participates in the Program. |
| Advanced Component |
Participants who have done well in the basic component and complete all skills modules are invited to continue on to a more advanced “train-the-trainer” Program whereby they will commit to a formal learning program for three (3) months in order to learn advanced skills to mentor other youth (with the assistance of a professional). These youth will receive a Regesh Mentor Certificate, which states that they have completed a set train-the-trainer Program and can then assist staff in helping other youth. Further to the previous description of the Day Program whereby youth can use the Program as either a drop-in centre or a skills development program, all youth will have the ability to become better prepared in skills for employability and life-skills training. Job development will incorporate three major parts: (a) assessment; (b) skills development; (c) apprentice work-program or advanced education. (a) Assessment: In partnership with Jewish Vocational Services, youth can be provided a psycho-educational assessment in order to determine the various options for future endeavours. Once the assessment is complete, the recommendations are shared with the youth. At that time, the options to discuss with the youth would include, but not be limited to, return to school with any special considerations and supports necessary for success, vocational training, employment or volunteering. (b) Skills Development: As noted above, participants who choose to participate in the skills modules are involved in a specialized program from the University of Washington (US) entitled “Reconnecting Youth” . This Program was specially designed to enrich: • Self-esteem • Decision making • Personal control • Interpersonal communications • Reduction of drug usage and its harmful effects (c) Apprentice Work-program or Advanced Education: All youth are encouraged and assisted in enrolling in one of the following activities: i. Furthering his/her education according to ability and educational history ii. Vocational training based on career counselling iii. Employment based on abilities and job searching skills iv. Volunteer program in which the staff assists the youth in finding a vocational activity based on career counselling and interests. As previously noted, the Day Program has the flexibility to allow a youth to participate in each area within a timely manner. That is, they can participate in only the activities they find interesting or choose to complete the different skills modules. |
